The Idea

HISTORY Goes POP

Welcome to the world of The Christian, where the visual culture of the past is reimagined. Our art edition is built on a passion for uncovering and reviving timeless motifs from art history. Through thoughtful research, Christian finds inspiration in imagery spanning from the Renaissance to the late 19th century decorative arts era.

The motifs in The Christian range from iconic copperplate engravings and woodcuts to vintage family portraits and landscapes. In each hand-printed serigraph (screen print), famous paintings are revisited and contemporary images seamlessly fused to bring history forward in bold colors.

Each piece is produced in Christian´s Munich studio, where we work on an impressive scale with the highest technical precision.

About screen printing:

In this technique, different parts of a motif are transferred to multiple screens, through which colors are transferred onto paper and together will form an image. Layering differents colors on top of each other builds intensity, allowing the artwork to glow with richness and depth, just as the Old Masters layered paint creating depth on the two-dimensional canvas.

Screen printing here is anything but mechanical; each color layer is hand-pulled through fine-mesh screens, layer by layer, until the colors reach their full vibrancy,  Each piece becomes a unique creation, carrying the power of an original painting.

In our The Christian online gallery, you’re invited to explore the treasures of past eras and feel the impact of modern craftsmanship.

Enjoy my colors! Yours, Christian Sedelmayer
